Healthier Together is an Alberta-based population health initiative from Alberta Health Services (AHS), grounded in evidence and the principles of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD). Its goal is to improve population health and reduce health inequities.
Through Healthier Together, we aim to shift the conversation from "What's wrong?" to "What's strong?" By focusing on the strengths of communities rather than their challenges, we emphasize what makes them resilient.
We support the integration of this approach into local communities to ensure long-term sustainability. By combining data, community knowledge, and lived experience, our approach is driven and led by the community itself, beginning with the skills, passion, and insights of its members.
Establish a local team with representatives across sectors (including schools, workplaces, health services, community organizations, municipal, etc.) and create a common vision.
Understand local data and community assets to identify strengths and guide decisions.
Develop a collective action plan with identified priorities that will inform action within and across sectors .
Support implementation and evaluate.
Support sustainability, share and celebrate successes.
We use this approach to create a different way of working and collaborating together across all the settings in the community. This way of working strive for collective impact by bringing together a group of actors from different sectors to work together towards a common agenda. The approach recognizes that local solutions leads to better outcomes.
